About The Legend

Professor Izham Cheong

Dr. Izham Cheong was born in 1949 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On completion of his secondary school education in the Methodist Boys’ School, he began his medical training at the University of Malaya. Following his graduation in 1974, he entered public service with the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. He completed his MRCP(UK) in 1977 and on returning home, he was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Medicine, National University of Malaysia (UKM) where he has stayed until today. He trained initially in Nephrology in Edinburgh and London (1980) and worked as a nephrologist at the Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur for many years. In 1990 he returned to Edinburgh on a Commonwealth Fellowship to train in Infectious Diseases. He has since been in the forefront of the battle against phentermine online AIDS in Malaysia. He was elected a Fellow of the Edinburgh and Glasgow College in 1988 and 1990 respectively. 

Dr. Izham has been a dedicated and committed teacher throughout his career. In recognition of his contribution, he was appointed a full Professor in 1992, a post he has held since then with unwavering determination. He designed the structure and contents of the first Mastership in Internal Medicine in Malaysia and remains closely associated with the training of physicians in the country. He has been a regular external examiner at undergraduate and postgraduate levels both locally and overseas. He has also participated many times at the UK membership examination.

Presently his major research interest is on HIV infection and antibiotic use and misuse and antibiotic resistance. However he remains very comfortable with most areas of Internal Medicine. He has 29 publications in the international journals and 47 in the local journals. In addition he has presented more than 120 scientific papers.
